Choosing an activation metric your team can actually use
A practical method for finding the early behavior that connects user intent to durable value.
Begin with value, not convenience
An activation metric is an early behavior that suggests a user has experienced the core value of your app. It should be more meaningful than account creation and early enough to guide onboarding work.
Start by comparing retained and non-retained users. Look for behaviors that differ between the groups, then test whether the relationship holds across acquisition sources and user types. Correlation is a clue, not proof.
Make the definition operational
A useful metric has a clear event, actor, time window, and threshold. Write these down. Before adopting it, ask whether a team can influence the behavior without making the experience worse.
Keep a small set of guardrails
Pair activation with quality and retention measures. A faster path to activation is only valuable when users continue receiving value afterward.
